Skimming and re-plastering in Gloucester
Skim or start again?
A skim is a thin finishing coat over plaster that's still well bonded. When the old plaster has blown, is crumbling, or has come away from the wall, it needs to be removed and the wall rebuilt from the background up. Steve checks which you've got before quoting.
Old houses and lath walls
Many Gloucester homes still have lath behind the plaster. On one period bathroom we took the walls right back to the timber lath, boarded them with moisture-resistant board and finished them with a new skim coat.
Dry-lining
Where it suits the wall, plasterboard can be fixed to it and then skimmed, which gives a flat, fresh surface.
After the builders, electricians or window fitters
Chased-out cables, new door frames and replaced windows all leave rough edges. We patch and skim them so the room is ready to paint.
Questions
Will my walls need to come back to the brick?
Only if the plaster underneath isn't sound. Sound plaster can usually take a skim; Steve will tell you which after a look.
Do you plaster bathrooms?
Yes. In a bathroom we've used moisture-resistant board before skimming.
How soon can I decorate?
When the plaster has dried to an even pale colour with no dark patches. Drying time varies with the room, so Steve will advise.
Do you give prices over the phone?
Not a fixed price. Every wall is different, so send photos or book a visit for a written quote.
